Oh, we had a fantastic time on vacation. We spent 7 days on a cruise ship, in the Caribbean, and had a great time (see the pictures from my previous post). The only bad part was our last Island (St. Marteen) was skipped. Hurricane Igor was swirling in the ocean and caused a whole lot of disruption in the water on all the islands but it was particularly bad on St. Marteen and they closed the port. They wouldn't let our ship dock. The swells were too high and it was too dangerous. So we had to spend a day at sea heading back to Puerto Rico. Otherwise though, the trip was fabulous!
We were lucky enough to have my parents watch both kids all week and they took such good care of both kids! Charlie keeps talking about his "vacation" with Tutu and Gampa. We would not have been able to go away if not for my parents watching them...thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
So we got back and things very quickly fell back into routine...Charlie started his new class at school (true Pre-K) and he loves it. Aaron was visiting his class that he is going to start next week (Tuesday). I started work again after 12 days off, and Alex started school again. All was well.
Thursday I took Aaron to the doctor because he was out of sorts, very whiny, low grade temp, and hoarse...wanted to make sure it wasn't an ear infection or strep throat. They diagnosed him with a virus (Croupe to be exact) and said other than a humidifier while he sleeps, there's not much you can do. So I went to work that night with instructions for Alex on what to look out for, when to call me, etc.
I came home the next morning and Aaron was still sleeping, Alex took Charlie to school and I laid down waiting for Aaron to get up. When he did wake up, hit hit the proverbial fan. He was having such a hard time breathing. He was making alot of inspiratory and expiratory noises, he was sucking his chest all the way to his back with every attempted breath. He was pale and pink but blue around his lips. I turned the hot shower on and sat in the bathroom with him while Alex got the phone. I called the doctors' emergency line and asked them what to do. I was guessing emergency room and then he tried a few breaths that he clearly couldn't take, there was no air exchange. He looked at me like he was suffocating and was patting me on my chest. Then he passed out in my arms and his eyes rolled up in his head. The docs already were telling me call 911 while this was happening so that's what I did. They came and we were off to the hospital.
After a few breathing treatments of Racemic epinephrine, some oxygen, and some oral steroids, he came around and was looking worlds better...still miserable and had a nasty cough, but looked like he wasn't going to die. They sent us home knowing that the steroids should carry him through for 72 hours, and that was it.
OMG...I can't take this kid! How many times can you feel like your kid might die on you? I go to work every night that I am scheduled hoping that nothing crazy happens to Aaron. I worry about Charlie but he's never scared me like this before! Oh the joys of motherhood! He's a bit better today. Still miserable, still barking at times, but playing more and getting into things more. Even eating a bit better. That's it! Thanks for listening!
